(1). Be sure to determine your 'Degree Plan' to the graduate school in consultation with the MS coordinator or major research professor (if you know who that is) using Dynamic Forms; see this blog for further details.

If you need to add or delete courses to your degree plan for whatever reason, you may fill out a revision by filling out using Dynamic Forms. Note that in order to graduate with your MS, your degree plan and transcript course listing should match EXACTLY. You are permitted to register for 6 elective credit hours in 6000 level Chemistry or Biology courses.
You are permitted to register for 8-19 credit hours CHEM 6640 (Thesis research); it is important that you do not exceed this number lest you run into financial aid issues. A minimum of 8 credit hours is required to complete the degree, but up to 19 credit hours are permitted. It is recommended that you take the absolute minimum number of credit hours permitted per semester, and load up in your terminal semester on whatever credit hours remain to account for the total required 8 hours. Consult with your major research advisor for further details.
(2). Complete your core courses first. Unlike elective courses, core courses are not offered every semester as elective courses are. It is best to complete them before your elective courses to ensure timely completion of your coursework. Listed in the MS Chemistry Handbook (click here for a pdf copy), the following courses are offered in the Fall semester:
CHEM 6100 Intermediate Organic Chemistry (3 credits)
CHEM 6400 Intermediate Inorganic Chemistry (3 credits)
In the spring, the following core courses are offered:
CHEM 6230/6231 Intermediate Analytical Chemistry Lecture and Lab (4 credits)
CHEM 6300 Intermediate Physical Chemistry (3 credits)

You will not need to pay for these courses before the semester starts, but register for them to hold a spot. This is particularly important for those of you who have GTA assignments. If you do not register for your classes in a timely manner, then it will be up to you to schedule in your classes so that they do not interfere with your teaching schedules.

New, incoming students in the Spring semester should register for your courses by the first week of January. New, incoming students for the Fall semester as well as those students returning in the Fall semester, you should register before the last day of Final Exams in the Spring semester. (You may refer to the MTSU Academic Calendar here.)

(3). Refer often to the MS Chemistry Handbook (vide supra). Keep up to date with the forms found therein, especially pages 10 and 11. It is a good idea to have in mind prospective MS committee members when you interview faculty (page 10 of Handbook). When you get close to selecting a thesis committee, this form should be filled out in Dynamic Forms.

(4). If you received a GTA, you must undergo safety training. If you are scheduled to teach a physical science or general chemistry section, you must attend training and instruction to be administered by Dr. Tammy Melton roughly 1-2 weeks before the start of class; if you are a GTA for Organic Chemistry laboratories, Dr. Francesca Gruppi will have special training sessions especially designed for you. The contact information of these professors is in the above hotlinks. You will interact with these faculty during the course of your teaching assignment(s).

(5). Safety first: Be sure to follow all the rules and be diligent in instructing students in following them, i.e., as a GTA be sure that your students wear safety goggles, not wear open-toed shoes, etc. You may be subject to legal ramifications should an accident occur, and it is determined that you were negligent. For those of you who are international students, this is a chief reason for the minimum scores required for the English proficiency exams (e.g., TOEFL, IELTS).

On a related note, regarding your own research endeavors under the advisement of your major research professor, no experiment is worth sacrificing your life or getting seriously injured. Be sure you are aware of all safety protocols in the research laboratory.

(6). If English is a second language for you, make sure you do the following when teaching labs. The American students will know you are from a foreign country because of the accent. Don't be anxious about that. The key point in the teaching laboratory environment is to be clearly understood. Speak with enough volume to be heard, and slowly if necessary. There is a tendency to speak fast over words that are difficult to pronounce (perhaps in order to hide this weakness). This strategy does not work and can make things worse. When you come across words that are difficult to pronounce, there is no shame in slowing down. A mispronounced word spoken with intention at a clearly-heard volume is much more understandable than one said in a rushed manner at low volume. Student comprehension of what it is you are saying is important for safety in the teaching laboratory (see point #5 above).

(7). Scout the Chemistry graduate faculty research. Before selecting an advisor, take time to learn about their research by perusing their web pages (found here). If a faculty member happens to be presenting a research seminar (see point #8 below), that is a perfect time to see them and ask them about signing page 10 since can be considered a form of research discussion in his/her group.

(8). Pay attention to the seminar schedule. Click here to see the latest seminar schedule. It is generally expected that all graduate students attend seminars, esp. those that are held on "dead hour", where there is no class or GTA duty conflict. Attendance will be taken and reported to faculty who may use this information for various purposes, such as assigning grades for CHEM 6640, scholarship and fellowship award decisions.

(9). Communicate. Be sure to keep your major research professor in the loop of your research activities, and your thesis committee informed of your research activities, especially as you approach your thesis seminar defense. Your thesis defense seminar abstract should be approved by your thesis committee and advisor prior to submitting it to the Chemistry seminar coordinator.

(10). Learn to manage your time and your energy. Being able to pursue your research simultaneously along with coursework obligations and attending seminars is all part of the normal responsibilities of a graduate student. You will only be here for 2 years and should finish your MS thesis work at that time. You are permitted up to 6 semesters of GTA support (including summer, which counts as a semester.) A 7th semester may be granted, but an appeal is required to do so.

(11). Follow the appropriate timetable. Preferably before the start of your second semester, you should have already selected a major research professor and have already begun research work. In the middle of your 2nd semester, you should have selected your thesis committee (form on page 11 in the Handbook). Not everything works the first time. Leave room for trial and error. It is not uncommon to work on a project for months and learn that you have been going down the wrong path. That is why is called "re-search" (as in repeat).

Prof. Jim Tour of Rice University (one of our past seminar speakers, and a well-known researcher) said of his field of nanotechnology, "Typically 90% of your research efforts will not work. But, you live for the 10% (that does)." This sentiment applies here. Leave ample time for you to make research mistakes that you can correct before you run out of research support (in the form of a GTA or research assistantship).

(12). Initial progress report. During the 1st summer following the semester of entry, an initial progress report is required of all MS students of their independent projects for continuance of assistantship support (pages 5 and 12 in the handbook). This is typically carried out via MS Powerpoint (and whiteboard) presentation by the student in front of an audience consisting of at least the major thesis advisor and 1 member of the MS committee (not necessarily a member of the thesis committee)

(13). Exit appropriately. When you get ready to defend and graduate, be sure to fill out all the needed forms (digitally and on paper, if needed). If you need to switch advisors, please do that appropriately (page 13 in the handbook). Turn in your desk and lab keys. and let us know your next destination.

We wish you the best of success as you complete the program!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This is an update to the previous blog<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> on creating and revising your degree plan. All incoming accepted students are now required to submit a degree plan before the start of the first semester at MTSU, even if you don't know who your major MS research advisor is with whom you will complete your independent MS thesis.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
Managing your degree plan and navigating within it will all be accomplished using Dynamic Forms which you will generate via your Pipeline account. The following forms (described more fully below) will need to be generated, approved by your major thesis advisor and then by the MS Chemistry program coordinator (Dr. Charles Chusuei). If you don't know who your major thesis advisor will be select the MS coordinator for now; this can be changed later in the semester.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Note that you should select a major research professor with whom you will complete your independent research. You may use the forms in the appendices in the MS Chemistry Handbook (pages 10-11) as worksheets for the Dynamic Forms. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">To help us help you track your progress to graduation, be sure to submit your forms in the appendices of the handbook at the recommended semesters to the MS Coordinator.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Click here<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> to access the various Dynamic Forms. All the needed forms will be located under the "Forms for Current Graduate Students"<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> tab.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">1. Advising Form
The advising form is used to create your degree plan. Before completing this form, you should contact your major research advisor (or MS coordinator) for guidance on elective credit classes, which total between 5-7 credit hours. Fill out your portion of the form for approval by your major research advisor. Be sure to correct fill out his/her name and email address along with your information. Ultimately, note that your "academic advisor" is your "major research advisor," the one who will oversee your MS thesis work (click to enlarge;click on upper right hand "x" to exit).
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">If during the course of your study, you need to change your academic advisor (major research professor), you may do so by accessing the revision from under "Revision Form" within the "Forms for Current Graduate Students" tab. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">In addition, you may also change in electives using the form. After consulting with your advisor, enter in the reason for the change. Note that you must take a minimum of 8 credit hours of Thesis Research (CHEM 6640) and at most 19 credit hours. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
3. Intent to Graduate
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">All students are required to submit an Intent to Graduate Form during the first two weeks of the semester they plan to graduate. Submitting this form initiates the degree checkout process, including verification of completion of degree requirements. If the form is submitted after the deadline, the degree may still be conferred, but students may be unable to participate in commencement ceremonies or be published in the commencement program.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">4. Request to Withdraw Intent to Graduate
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">If you have filed an Intent to Graduate but later realize you will not actually be graduating, you must submit this form to alert the College of Graduate Studies. Since Intents are due early in the semester, some students realize after filing their Intent that they will not meet the requirements for degree conferral. If you have submitted an Intent, but do not actually graduate, you will not be able to register for classes again until you file this form. Once you complete all requirements and are ready to graduate in a future semester, you will need to submit your Intent to Graduate again.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">5. Advisory Committee Form
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">If you are writing a thesis or dissertation, you must submit an Advisory Committee Form to formally establish your committee and chair. This should be done in the beginning stages of the writing process, before your proposal. Please see the Thesis and Dissertation website for more information. See page 10 of the MS Chemistry Handbook for a worksheet for this exercise.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">6. Change in Advisory Committee Form
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">If you have established an Advisory Committee for writing your thesis or dissertation, and you need to make changes to your committee members, you will need to submit this form. You may use this form to add or subtract members from your committee or to designate a different chair.doctorCcubedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14434257430921405038noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3526462959239922811.post-19838315369492663842019-01-12T12:55:00.003-08:002020-01-30T13:41:03.934-08:00Creating and Revising Your MS Degree Plan<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">In an article by Scott Travis of the South Florida SunSentinel on January 12th, 2018, eight colleges had to pay back Federal aid dollars (as much as $5.6M for one school) to the US federal government following an external review finding that students received aid. <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">Beginning in Spring 2019, a new procedure will come into effect in filling out the MS degree plan that satisfies both financial aid and "Coursework toward Program of Study" (CPoS) requirements at MTSU. To maximize flexibility of degree plans to be filed, our program offers an 8-19 hour requirement of variable credits for CHEM 6640 "Thesis Research", and a required 5-7 hour variable credit of Chemistry electives. For CPoS and financial aid requirements to be fulfilled, the credit hours should be synchronized with those of the actual courses completed. Failure to do so has hampered past MS students.

New operational procedure for filling out the degree plan to sure fulfillment of both CPoS and financial aid requirements:
The first task you need to do is to fill out hte MS degree plan. [See blog on "Top 11 Things to Know and Do for a Great Start!" and hotlink for the blank degree plan form in point #1 for further details.] You will fill eventually fill out two versions of your MS degree plan. Follow these 3 steps.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><b style="font-family: "helvetica neue", arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Step 1:<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;"> After you have selected your major MS thesis advisor, consult with him/her to determine what appropriate elective courses would be most helpful for your independent research. These courses constitute the graduate Chemistry elective hours. The combination of these courses will be either 5, 6 or 7 credit hours. If your coursework deviates from the original plan, a revision to the degree plan form must be filed. If you take courses taken outside the degree plan will not be covered by financial aid. There are a variety of approved graduate electives in the MS program. Most of our offered courses have a 3-hour credit. Some courses have 2-hour (e.g., CHEM 6530 "Biochemical Techniques") and 4-hour credits (e.g., BIOL 6380 'Experimental Immunology', BIOL 6290 'Advanced Scanning Electron Microscopy,' etc.). The variable 5-to-7 credit hour range would encompass a combination of two 3-credit hours classes, a combination of 2-credit hour and 3-credit hour courses, or a combination of a 4-credit and 3-credit hour courses.
<b style="font-family: "helvetica neue", arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">
Step 2:<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;"> Sign up for 19 credit hours of CHEM 6640 research in your initial plan. Your final degree plan may likely differ. The 19 credit hours will take into account unexpected circumstances that you will result in more time spent than originally anticipated due to the unpredictable nature of independent research. For example, an important piece of equipment breaking down requiring an extended repair time may hamper the timely completion of your thesis work. The 19 credit hours also factors in a potential 7th semester graduate teaching assistantship extension, if needed (click <a href="http://ms-chemistry.blogspot.com/2017/08/need-7th-semester-graduate-teaching.html" style="font-family: "helvetica neue", arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">here<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;"> for details).
<b style="font-family: "helvetica neue", arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">
Step 3:<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;"> Close to the end of finishing your degree, fill out a <b style="font-family: "helvetica neue", arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Revision to Degree Plan <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">(click <a href="https://www.mtsu.edu/graduate/pdf/DegreePlanReviseALL.pdf" style="font-family: "helvetica neue", arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">here<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;"> to access form). <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">Consult with your major thesis advisor when planning your CHEM 6640 credit hours. There is no "cookie cut" way to register for these hours since by nature, independent research is highly variable. The absolute minimum hours acceptable to the graduate school to maintain the standard teaching assistantship is 6 credit hours for the fall semester, 6 credit hours during the spring semester and 1 credit hour for summer.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">You are permitted to sign up for more hours than needed. However, you should take heed that you do not go over the maximum number of allowed CHEM 6640 hours. One suggestion is to sign up for the absolute minimum hours per semester until you reach your terminal semester, and only then, load up on your remaining research hours (again, consult with your major research advisor for your particular case). Going over the cumulative 19 credit hour limit would cause problems with financial aid.

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: medium;">A former MS research student of mine found himself in the predicament of wanting to publish his MS thesis work, but were unable to because their material was posted on the web via ProQuest. He had inadvertently lost track of the time needed for embargoing their MS theses to allow for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">A good way to establish your scientific authority is to publish your research in respected, peer-reviewed journals. This will open career doors as a practicing scientist. At this current stage of your career, you will lean on the advice and mentoring of your major research professor. As you become more adept at thinking, carrying out experiments, and writing, you will need less and less oversight, and eventually be able to publish independently.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">A general rule of thumb is: if it is not original, it is not publishable. For example, a policy from the American Chemical Society, the largest publisher in the field of Chemistry/Biochemistry states:
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">"The [ACS journal title] considers for publication only original work that has not been previously published and is not under consideration for publication elsewhere. When submitting a manuscript, an author should inform the editor of any prior dissemination of the content in print or electronic format. This includes electronic posting of conference presentations, posters, and preprints on institutional repositories and other web sites. Any content that has been made publicly available, either in print or electronic format, and that contains a significant amount of new information, if made part of a submitted manuscript, may jeopardize the originality of the submission and may preclude consideration for publication."
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">In other words, premature release of your research data may jeopardize its suitability for publication in respected, peer-reviewed journals. There is a difference between having your results published in an ACS journal versus having them reported in a supermarket tabloid. To safeguard the quality of the peer-review process, the following precautions should be taken.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1) Do not post good data on social media. New researchers are often excited when they get intriguing results and hence want to disseminate it. However, posting data on social media in itself may be considered "already published".
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">2) When presenting work at a scientific conference, do not make copies of original, unpublished research materials and hand them out to your audience. This is especially true when the experiments are easy to duplicate. Unless you are presenting at a Gordon Research Conference (in which there is a signed agreement under penalty of prosecution), there is nothing to stop another researcher from running back to his/her lab, reproducing your results and sending it off to a journal before you have a chance to complete your work. A few years ago, I had a master's student who did this very thing as potential employers (as well as peers) visited him at an informal poster session. It is ok to distribute research articles that you have already published for job search/networking purposes.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">3) Don't forget to request an embargo to protect your intellectual property. MTSU requires that all Master of Science theses to be archived on ProQuest to complete the degree. An important reminder when archiving thesis on ProQuest: if the instructions are not exactly followed, you may find that the independent research that you have worked very hard for may have been disseminated on the world wide web. This could potentially preclude any of your efforts to publish in standard peer-reviewed articles and submission of patents.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It would be wise to search the web yourself to ensure that your work is not prematurely "published" on the web. One incident that occurred during the 2014-2015 academic year the week before Spring Break was that every single MS thesis from the MTSU Chemistry department was released on the web. Fortunately, this technical glitch was caught and corrected before too much damage was done. To prevent a thesis from being immediately disseminated (which would preclude publication, patent applications, etc.), the student must request an embargo. It is not automatically given.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Link to ProQuest: www.etdadmin.com.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The standard options allow graduate students to select up to 2 years wide dissemination of their thesis/dissertation (see image below).

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">There is an option to do an indefinite embargo by leaving the end date space blank. However, this option is hidden from view to the student. The student must ask the ProQuest technical support to include this feature to take advantage of it (see hotlink above).

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">Only students are able to change their embargo options. To do so, they must contact the ProQuest Publishing Group. Their phone number is 1-800-521-0600 ext. 77020, and they are open from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Eastern. Their email address is disspub (at) proquest (dot) com.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">If a student is concerned about their document's inclusion in the JEWL Scholar database as well (s)he can change their options in ProQuest, which will carry over to JEWL Scholar. And then, the student can contact the library's Dean, Dr. Bonnie.Allen (at) mtsu (dot) edu to request the removal of their document.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The following are answers to frequently asked questions from prospective students interested in applying to the MS Chemistry program at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU).

(1). Where do I go to apply to the Master of Science Chemistry Program at MTSU?

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">To apply to the MS Chemistry program, go to this website, and follow the instructions therein.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">(2). What are good scores to get on the Graduate Record Exam?

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">To be competitive, you should aim to achieve 50th percentile scores or higher on the Quantitative (which measures mathematical ability) and Verbal sections (which measures reading/critical thinking ability) and an Analytical Writing score of 3.0 or higher (click here to find out what this number means). Although there isn't an official minimum value for acceptance, please note that in the assignment of graduate teaching assistantships, applicants are ranked according to credentials with GRE scores being one of them.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The Chemistry MS committee, which reviews applicants will consider these scores along with other credentials you provide to make admissions decisions. Note that these standards change from year to year for Verbal and Quantitative scores. To get an idea of "how good" your scores are, check the ETS web site<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">(3). Is it required to have an undergraduate Chemistry degree to qualify for admission?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">No. A minor in Chemistry with additional coursework in Quantitative Chemical Analysis (CHEM 2300 at MTSU) will suffice.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">(4). As an applicant, am I automatically considered for a graduate teaching assistantship (GTA)?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">No. Assistantships are considered separately<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">. To apply, go to this web page. Admission into the program does not guarantee financial support. There are a limited number of spots, and applications for these positions are competitive. If you don't immediately get a GTA position (and if you qualify) you will be ranked based on your credentials and waiting listed.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The MS committee meets to discuss rankings for GTAs. It is possible to be accepted without support. It would be wise to include favorable, non-required items (e.g., letter of recommendation, etc.) in your application to maximize your ranking.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">(5). As an international student (where English is not the official language) I am interested in obtaining a graduate teaching assistantship. What credentials should I have to qualify for this support? <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Is there a minimum TOEFL or IELTS score required?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-align: justify;">If you are from any of the following non-US countries, an English proficiency exam is not<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-align: justify;"> required: <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Australia, Barbados, Botswana, Bermuda, Bahamas, Canada, Ireland, Ghana, Grenada, <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Guam, Jamaica, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria, New Zealand, South Africa, Trinidad and Zimbabwe.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">For those of you who are not in this category, the minimum requirement for TOEFL is a score of 21 on the speaking section or 6.5 on the IELTS speaking section. These scores are required by the state for GTA. In the field of Chemistry where there are laboratory practicums involved, laboratory safety is paramount. Relevant to spoken English proficiency, we in the Chemistry department want to prevent accidents that may result from a misunderstanding of instructions given to students by the GTA. Furthermore, it is recommended that you have a total score of at least 39 on the TOEFL and a 12.5 on the IELTS.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">One more important detail: do not forget to include the WES evaluation that converts your grades from your undergraduate university to U.S. grading standards.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">(6). May I use an unofficial, non-US transcript for evaluation purposes?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">International students must submit an evaluation for every nonāU.S.
transcript before their application can be fully processed. You can see this requirement on the International Students
Admissions page. A list of accredited evaluation services
can be found here.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">(7). What documents do the MS committee look for in considering an applicant for admission?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The Chemistry MS committee examines your academic transcripts. Did you take the correct courses to be considered? Do you have the appropriate undergraduate preparation in these subjects: general chemistry, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, biochemistry and analytical chemistry? Your grade point average will be examined as well as your GRE exams. If you are an international student, your English proficiency exams will be considered in the case mentioned in point #4<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> above.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

(8). Are there particularly good times to apply to the program?

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The Chemistry department evaluates applicants on a rolling basis. Note that <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">the MS committee also ranks applicants according to credentials for GTA spots. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Preference is given for spring consideration from applications received by October 1st, and summer/fall consideration given for those applications received by March 1st.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Although it is not required that you apply by these dates, the advantage of doing so is that there would be ample time for you to be considered for GTA positions for ranking purposes. An early application would permit more consultation time to improve your application.

(9). What is an "M number"? Is there a preferred venue for checking my admission status?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">When you apply and become a part of the MTSU community, you will be assigned a personal identification number known as the "M number", which will consist of the letter "M" followed by 8 digits. You should also obtain an MTSU email account and begin using to communicate with various parties. In some cases, there may be issues related to privacy of your personal records. To ensure that this information is protected, use your MTSU email address. I know personally of a case in which the email sender of a supposed student was not the student who I thought I was communicating with.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">(10). Do you offer the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in "Chemistry"? A non-thesis master's degree?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">At this time, no, for either of these options, but...
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-align: justify;">i) The Chemistry Department participates in various Science PhD programs, namely, in Molecular Biosciences<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-align: justify;">, Math and Science Education<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-align: justify;">, and Computational Sciences<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-align: justify;"> (see hotlinks herein).
